12 December 2025

We are pleased to share an important and reassuring development for Physician Associates (PAs) and Anaesthesia Associates (AAs) working within the NHS.

NHS Resolutions has now provided clear written confirmation that PAs and AAs continue to receive full indemnity protection under the established NHS indemnity schemes, irrespective of how they are deployed in practice. This confirmation was issued in a letter dated 25 November 2025 and affirms that indemnity coverage is not conditional on adherence to any specific guidance or changes arising from the Leng Review or related recommendations. You can learn more about their update from our colleagues at UMAPs here.

What This Means for Associates

  • Comprehensive Professional Protection: Both primary and secondary care practitioners can be confident that their professional indemnity remains robust and comprehensive under the NHS Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) and the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST).
  • No Preconditions Attached: Indemnity is confirmed without requiring compliance with any particular guidance or changes to scope based on the Leng Review.
  • Assurance Amid Ongoing Debate: This clarification removes uncertainty that followed the publication of the Leng Review and subsequent guidance, offering stability as debate continues around professional roles and employment arrangements affecting Associates.

This outcome underscores the value of collective representation and advocacy in securing clear and protective outcomes for the profession. We are heartened to see such definitive confirmation from NHS Resolution and hope this brings reassurance to members in all areas of practice.

As always, CMAPs remains committed to keeping you informed about key developments that affect your professional rights, working conditions, and standing within the NHS multidisciplinary workforce.

If you have questions about how this update relates to your personal practice or employment context, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

With best regards,
